Bag Category Guide — Choosing the Right Style for Your Program
Which bag type actually fits your buyers, your budget and your first order.
Most custom bag projects start with a picture rather than a category. Someone sends a photo, asks for "something like this", and the real questions only surface later: how much does it need to hold, who carries it and for how long, is it a retail product or a giveaway, and how many are you buying the first time.
Category is the decision that everything else follows from. It sets the size range, the fabric that makes sense, which branding methods are practical, and how far your budget stretches at a given quantity. This guide lays out the main categories we produce, what each one is genuinely good at, and how to narrow down when two of them look equally plausible.
Ask These Four Questions First
Before comparing categories, get clear on four things. With these answered, most projects narrow to one or two options immediately.
- What has to fit inside? Phone and keys, or a 15" laptop, or a full change of clothes. Capacity is the fastest way to eliminate half the options.
- How long is it worn? A bag carried for ten minutes at a trade show and a bag carried all day on a hike are different products, even at the same size.
- Is it sold or given? A retail product carries margin and justifies better fabric, lining and hardware. A promotional giveaway is judged on impact per unit, and specification follows that.
- How many, first order? Quantity affects which fabrics and hardware are practical to source. Starting small is fine — see our MOQ & Order Tiers Guide — but tell us the real number rather than an aspirational one.
The Categories at a Glance
| Category | Typical size range | Typical capacity | Commonly used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Backpack | 40–50 cm H | 18–30 L | School, commute, outdoor, laptop carry |
| Waist bag / belt bag | 30–40 cm W | 1–4 L | Running, events, festivals, everyday minimal carry |
| Crossbody / chest bag | 18–30 cm W | 1–5 L | Urban everyday, travel essentials, streetwear |
| Tote bag | 35–45 cm W | 10–20 L | Retail, grocery, conference, promotional |
| Cosmetic / toiletry bag | 18–28 cm W | 1–4 L | Retail sets, travel kits, gift-with-purchase |
| Duffel / travel bag | 45–60 cm L | 30–50 L | Gym, sports teams, weekend travel |
Ranges above are typical, not fixed. Every dimension is made to your specification — these are the sizes buyers most often land on, given as a starting point rather than a constraint.
What Each Category Is Actually Good At
| Category | Strengths | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Backpack | Highest capacity for the weight; weight sits on both shoulders; large flat panels take branding well | Most complex to build — more panels, more hardware, more sampling rounds |
| Waist bag | Hands-free and light; low fabric use; strong retail and event appeal | Small print area; buckle and webbing quality is very visible to the wearer |
| Crossbody / chest bag | Fashion-forward and gender-neutral; quick to iterate on; strong streetwear pull | Capacity fills up fast; strap adjustment quality makes or breaks it |
| Tote | Simplest construction; largest uninterrupted print area; broad appeal | Little structure unless you add a base panel; handle attachment is the failure point |
| Cosmetic bag | Small, inexpensive to sample; excellent as a set or an add-on item | Zipper and lining quality carries the whole impression at this size |
| Duffel | High capacity with a simple shape; strong for teams and sports programs | Bulky to ship; strap and base reinforcement matter more than on smaller bags |
Choosing Between Two That Look Similar
Waist bag or crossbody? Both carry the same small essentials. A waist bag sits against the body and stays put when you move, which is why it wins for running, cycling and festivals. A crossbody hangs and swings, which is fine when you are walking and irritating when you are not. Choose by movement, not by looks.
Backpack or duffel? If it is carried more than a few minutes at a time, a backpack. If it is mostly moved from car to locker, a duffel — simpler to build and more capacity for the same fabric.
Tote or backpack, for a giveaway? A tote is simpler, flatter to ship and gives you the biggest print area for your brand. A backpack is kept and used for longer. Decide whether you are buying impressions or retention.
Cosmetic bag or small pouch? If it stands up on a counter and holds bottles upright, it is a cosmetic bag and it needs a structured base. If it lies flat in a suitcase, a pouch is lighter and cheaper to make.
What Category Does to Your Cost and Timeline
You are not just choosing a shape. Category drives complexity, and complexity drives everything else.
| Factor | Simpler categories (tote, pouch, cosmetic) | Complex categories (backpack, duffel) |
|---|---|---|
| Panels and pieces | Few | Many |
| Hardware count | Minimal | Zippers, buckles, sliders, adjusters, mesh |
| Sampling rounds | Usually fewer | Usually more, especially on a new pattern |
| Sensitivity to spec changes | Low | High — one change can affect several panels |
| Branding area | Large and flat | Split across smaller curved panels |
MOQ is not the same for every category. More complex construction means more pattern work and more component sourcing, so the practical starting quantity moves with the style. We work from 50 pcs\ as a starting point — the confirmed figure for your specific style, fabric and branding comes in your quotation
Sampling: 7–15 days. Bulk production: 15–30 days. These hold across categories, but a first-time complex style with several rounds of correction will use more of the sampling window than a simple one.
A Practical Way to Start
If you are undecided, start with the simplest category that solves your buyer's problem. Simpler builds sample faster, cost less to get wrong, and teach you how your buyers actually respond. A tote or waist bag program that sells out is a far better foundation for a backpack launch than a backpack that sat.
If you already know the category, send us the specification you have — even if it is only a photo and a rough size. We will come back with what is practical, what needs changing, and what it will take to sample it.
FAQ
Which bag category has the lowest starting quantity? Simpler constructions such as totes, pouches and cosmetic bags involve fewer panels and less hardware, so they are the easiest styles to start small with. We work from 50 pcs\* as a starting point across categories, and Anna will confirm the figure for your specific style, fabric and branding method in your quotation.
Can you make a category that is not listed on this page? The categories on this page are the ones buyers ask for most often, not a limit. Send us your reference photo and target dimensions and we will confirm what is practical.
Waist bag or crossbody bag — which should I choose? Choose by how the bag is used rather than how it looks. A waist bag sits against the body and stays stable during movement, which suits running, cycling and events. A crossbody hangs and swings, which is comfortable for walking and urban everyday carry but less so during activity.
Which category gives the biggest area for my logo? Totes and backpacks have the largest flat panels, so they carry large prints and embroidery best. Waist bags, crossbody bags and cosmetic bags have smaller and often curved surfaces, which suits woven labels, patches, embroidery and compact prints. See our Logo & Branding Methods guide for what each method needs.
Do different categories have different production times? The windows are the same — sampling in 7–15 days and bulk production in 15–30 days. What changes is how many sampling rounds a style needs. A complex backpack on a new pattern typically takes more correction rounds than a simple tote.
Can I order more than one category in the same order? Yes. Each style is quoted on its own specification and quantity. Tell us the full list and Anna will put the combination together in one quotation.
I only have a photo of a bag I like. Is that enough to start? It is enough to start the conversation. Send the photo along with the size you have in mind, what it needs to hold, and roughly how many you need. We will tell you what is achievable and what needs adjusting before anything goes to sampling.
